BLOG OUTSIDE DOORS GUIDE

Option 1: Exterior door behind the exterior wall (rebated wall)

This is the most common situation for a front exterior door. The door is placed behind the brick façade, providing better sealing and insulation.

Step 1: Measure the opening size of your exterior door

Measure the opening between the exterior walls:

  • width: top, middle, and bottom
  • height: left, middle, and right

Always use the smallest measurement. This is your clear opening size.

Step 2: Calculate the manufacturing size of your front door

For a correct installation of your custom-made exterior door, add:

  • +25 mm on the left
  • +25 mm on the right
  • +25 mm at the top

This is the manufacturing size.

Step 3: Check the opening direction and available space

These extra 25 mm on the 3 sides are a general guideline. Also make sure your door has enough space on the inside to open properly.

Example

  • Opening size: 950 x 2000 mm
  • Manufacturing size:
    • width: 1000 mm
    • height: 2025 mm

These dimensions are ideal for anyone wanting to install a new front door behind the façade.

Option 2: Exterior door between the exterior wall (between the brick façade)

In this case, the exterior door is placed completely within the opening. This is often seen in renovation projects or when replacing an exterior door.

Step 1: Measure the opening size

Use the same method:

  • measure the width at 3 points
  • measure the height at 3 points

Always use the smallest measurement.

Step 2: Calculate the manufacturing size

For a perfect installation of your custom-made exterior door, reduce the dimensions by:

  • 6 to 10 mm on the left
  • 6 to 10 mm on the right
  • 6 to 10 mm at the top

Step 3: Take installation and door hardware clearance into account

Make sure to leave enough clearance for installation and for the door hardware to function properly.

Example of measuring a front door

The opening size is 950 x 2000 mm.

Your manufacturing size will then be:

  • width: 934 mm
  • height: 1992 mm

A few tips when measuring your front door

When buying a new exterior door, it is very important to measure correctly. This helps prevent possible installation issues.

Always measure multiple times and check the following:

  • threshold
