EI₁ 30 fire doors: the standard for fire-safe construction projects

What does EI₁ 30 mean?
EI₁ 30 is a European classification for the fire resistance of doors.
The letter E stands for integrity: the door remains a barrier against flames and hot gases for a defined period of time.
The letter I stands for insulation: the temperature rise on the non-fire-exposed side of the door remains limited.
The number 30 means that the door provides fire protection for 30 minutes.
An EI₁ 30 fire door therefore guarantees fire resistance for 30 minutes. This helps slow down the spread of fire and smoke between different compartments and gives occupants more time to evacuate safely.
The transition to EI₁ 30 fire-resistant doors
Regulations regarding fire-resistant doors have evolved significantly in recent years. With the publication of the new Royal Decree concerning the basic standards for fire and explosion prevention in June 2022, the transition towards EI₁ fire doors was introduced.
For projects where the building permit application was submitted before 1 July 2022, or where no building permit is required, both Belgian RF doors according to the NBN 713.020 standard and EI₁ doors according to EN 13501-2 can still be used.
For projects where the building permit application was submitted after 1 July 2022, only EI₁ fire doors are permitted.
Today, EI₁ 30 and EI₁ 60 fire doors are the standard for fire-resistant door solutions.
